Library books

Library books are a collectable questline that World of Warcraft: Forever brings back from Season of Discovery. Around Azeroth, books, scrolls and tomes sit on tables, shelves and altars; each one is a quest item that a librarian in Stormwind or Undercity takes off your hands. In Forever the milestone rewards are new: a necklace after ten different books and a ring after twenty.

How it works

where the books come from, the librarians, the counts

The questline arrived with Season of Discovery's first phase (patch 1.15.0, November 2023) with sixteen books; eight more came with each of phases 2, 3 and 4 (patches 1.15.1 to 1.15.3, February to July 2024), for 40 books in all. There it was a mage affair: every quest was mage-only, each book paid a Comprehension Charm, the item mages used to decipher scrambled scrolls and Spell Notes (which is how several mage runes were unlocked), and the milestone quests handed out runes: Icy Veins after 10 books, Spell Power after 20, Deep Freeze after 25 and Arcane Barrage after 35. Forever's database holds all 40 book quests. It keeps the books, the librarians and the quests, but the milestones now pay jewellery any class can wear, and mages get a new quest of their own.

  • Books do not drop from mobs. Each one is looted from a fixed object in the world: a Spellbook, Scrolls, a Manual, a Tome, or in one case a mural you trace.
  • Bring a book to your faction's librarian: Garion Wendell in Stormwind's Mage Quarter or Owen Thadd in Undercity's Magic Quarter. Beta players report the librarian only offers the quest while a book is in your bags.
  • Every book is its own quest, so hand them in one at a time as you find them. Each turn-in pays a Comprehension Charm, an item mages use to read scrambled scrolls; Wowhead's Forever database also lists the charm at reagent vendors in the capitals, so nobody needs to hoard books for it.
  • Any class can take part: a level 1 warrior picked up the first quest in the beta. The quests still carry their Season of Discovery levels (20, 35, 45 and 60 by set) but none of them has a level requirement; the danger is the zones.
  • After ten different books the librarian offers Friend of the Library: pick one of two necklaces. After twenty in total, Greater Friend of the Library: pick one of two rings. The first ten count towards the twenty.
  • Books are unique and bind when picked up. A book that stands in two places still counts once.
  • Mages also get Research Access, a quest new in Forever that teaches the Comprehension skill and its spell Study.

Quest: Friend of the Library. Offered once you have handed in ten different books. Both necklaces are Rare with no class restriction; Wowhead's tooltips show no level requirement and beta players report none. In Season of Discovery this quest paid the Icy Veins rune instead, and Wowhead's Forever entry still lists that rune next to the jewellery; beta players report only the jewellery being offered.

Quest: Greater Friend of the Library. Offered at twenty different books; the ten from the necklace count. Both rings are Rare; Wowhead's tooltips show no level requirement and beta players report none. The first two sets hold 24 books, so you do not need the later sets for the ring. In Season of Discovery this quest paid the Spell Power boots rune, which Wowhead's Forever entry still lists next to the rings.

The sixteen books from Season of Discovery's first phase. They sit in the level 5–30 zones and the capital cities, so most characters can collect the ten needed for the necklace while levelling. Quest level 20.

For mages: Study

The librarians also give mages a quest of their own, Research Access, which is new in Forever. It teaches a new skill (ForeverChanges calls it Comprehension, Warcraft Tavern calls it Research) and the spell Study. Nobody knows yet how many books you must hand in before the quest appears.

Study needs level 6 and a Light Feather, takes 6 seconds to cast, has a one-hour cooldown and reads: “Perform spell research, resulting in a bundle of scrolls. Requires a suitable library.” The Bundle of Scrolls it makes is opened for scrolls.

Beta bug: mages report the new skill and its window disappearing after a relog (a Blizzard forum thread from 20 September 2026 and comments under Warcraft Tavern's article). The thread had no Blizzard reply as of 24 September.
